30 interesting FACTS about the Singapore MRT that you probably don’t give a shit about but it would be cool to show-off to your friends.
- A shell station is below Changi Airport and Punggol MRT stations. Meaning these stations are “prepared” to be interchange stations in the coming future, thus linking Changi Airport, Pasir Ris, Punggol and Woodlands (or Sembawang) directly.
- Chinatown will be an interchange. It is currently North-East Line (NEL). The new station, Chinatown Downtown Line (DTL) is built surprisingly on top, not below of the exisiting Chinatown NEL station.
- Take a look at the map. There isn’t a NE2 on NEL, NE6 and NE12 on North-South Line (NSL). These stations are located at the Tanjung Pagar KTM Stesen, Sungei Kadut and Canberra respectively. All of these stations will be built in the future, soon enough.
- Bouncing off on the NSL will be longer in the future. NS28 Marina Pier station is currently being built. It is after NS27 Marina Bay
- Paya Lebar station is the first station to be above-ground and underground at the same time. The next one is Buona Vista. These two stations are currently the only two stations that are interchanging with the Circle Line (CCL) and they are both above-ground and on the East-West Line (EWL).
- Paya Lebar CCL station is the first (and currently the only) station with three-track platform that is underground. The next three-track station is Bedok Town Park station on the DTL.
The first above ground three-track station was Ang Mo Kio. Jurong East will also get it’s fourth track by next year (that’s why they’ve been doing construction).- Bishan is the first and only station that was ever at-grade (on the ground). Since it’s renovations, it became underground and the layout of the station has been pretty shit.
- At Promenade CCL, notice that the trains only use one side of the platform. The other side is a knock-down panel, in the future will serve the Circle Line Extension (CE) that will go to Marina Bay via Bayfront (where Marina Bay Sands is).
- Promenade CCL will interchange with DTL, however, it is not cross-platform (Like Raffles Place/City Hall/Tanah Merah/Jurong East). Bayfront CCL will be cross-platform with the DTL.
- Ten Mile Junction LRT station is the ONLY station with one platform for one train and opens only on one side and is the ONLY fully-airconditioned LRT station.
Ten Mile Junction also got its name from the fact that from the place itself, it would take you about 10 miles to get to that spot itself to the city via Bukit Timah.
Oh and guess what? They’re renaming the place to Junction 10 because the people who did Junction 8 is taking over.- If you didn’t know, Yio Chu Kang station and Khatib station has the longest distance between two stations. If that isn’t crazy enough for you, there was supposedly going to be a Lentor MRT station there. Not crazy enough? Lentor station was supposedly serving Disneyland, which by the way is now in Hong Kong. Sucks.
- There was supposedly going to be a
- Yishun LRT that links Khatib, Yishun and Sembawang,
- Jurong LRT that links all the towns in Jurong,
- Bedok LRT that links Chai Chee, Bedok Central, Town, Reservoir, North & South
Well, the list goes on, but the idea was shelved because the Sengkang LRT and Punggol LRT sucked ass so the government was like, “fuck this. Let’s build MRTs instead.”- Dover MRT is the first station that was built on an existing line and it wasn’t planned to be built at all. It was because the bitches at Singapore Polytechnic was too lazy to get off at either Buona Vista or Clementi. Contrary to popular belief, Dover MRT was not designed by SP students/lecturers.
- Bras Basah MRT is the deepest MRT station: 35 meters. Even the biggest station, Dhoby Ghaut MRT, which is currently the only station to host three lines, is only 28 meters deep.
- Currently, even if CCL and DTL is fully completed, EWL is the only line that has no blanks in between.
- EWL is also going to extend westward, Joo Koon will no longer be the terminus by 2017 (or sometime around there) and it will extend all the way towards Tuas Checkpoint. Also, the extension will boast an interchange that forks a branch to Jurong Island. They’re also building a new depot to accommodate the extension and more trains.
- Currently, only Tanjong Pagar station and Lorong Chuan station (and soon Clarke Quay station) are the only stations that are sandwiched between interchange stations.
- The Marina Bay to Dhoby Ghaut stretch of the NSL have four consecutive interchange stations.
- Marina Bay (interchange with CCL)
- Raffles Place & City Hall (interchange with EWL)
- Dhoby Ghaut (interchange with NEL, CCL)- Tan Kah Kee MRT station, originally Duchess, was petitioned by Hwa Chong Institiution students to have it call Hwa Chong, but Singaporeans weren’t having that kind of shit and the policy of using school names so LTA gave in and named the station Tah Kah Kee in tribute (forcefully) of the founder.
(And I bet everyone of you can’t pinpoint Tan Kah Kee on a map if I didn’t say it was at Hwa Chong because that place doesn’t exist)- By 2020, all polytechnics in Singapore will be connected to an MRT except Ngee Ann Poly.
- Singapore Polytechnic - Dover MRT
- Nanyang Polytechnic - Yio Chu Kang MRT
- Temasek Polytechnic - Tampines West MRT (on the DTL)
- Republic Polytechnic - Woodlands (Probably Riverside, on the upcoming Thomson Line (TSL)
Ngee Ann Poly will probably be connected by the future Holland Line (though unconfirmed).- Chinatown MRT and Clarke Quay MRT is so near each other that it’s recommended that you walk over than wait for a train to go from one station to the next.
- Tampines EWL station and the upcoming Tampines DTL is so far (the DTL station is nearer to the bus interchange) in hopes that it will alleviate the trains on the EWL.
- The NSL, EWL and NEL are radial lines (MRT lines that cut across the island). CCL is an orbital line (that, is, well, a circle that connects all the different lines).
- The DTL, however was supposedly three different MRT lines joined up to form one lasso of a line.
The Bukit Timah stretch (from Bukit Panjang to Rochor) is supposedly called the Bukit Timah Line (BTL) and is considered to be a radial line. This section is now called DTL2.
DTL1 from Bugis to Chinatown was supposedly part of the Circle Line Marina extension. They were like, “let’s not waste time, join the lines up and whoop! We actually found a good for a line that is in the middle of the city”.
Chinatown to Expo, the latest stretch is called DTL3. As mentioned, it is a line to alleviate traffic. Originally, DTL3 was part the top part of the Eastern Region Line (ERL), a rectangular line connects Tampines and Marine Parade directly and straight into the city. ERL will eventually function as a radial line in the future. (Just wait for announcements)- The DTL actually crosses itself at Rochor MRT station and was SUPPOSED to interchange itself so people on DTL3 could skip DTL1 and go straight towards DTL2 but due to bad planning… Never mind.
- It is already set in stone that the TSL will happen. It is from Woodlands > Ang Mo Kio > Orchard > Marina Bay.
- NEL was supposed to end at Outram MRT until the government realised what a pot of gold the Habourfront area was.
- Farrer Park MRT and the new Farrer Road MRT are nowhere near each other despite having such similar names. Bukit Panjang MRT/LRT, Bukit Batok MRT and Bukit Gombak face this predicament as well.
2 more names will face the same predicament if LTA doesn’t change the names of the new DTL stations
- Bedok (current, Bedok Town Park and Bedok Reservoir)
- Tampines (current EWL station, Tampines East and West)- Yes, it is indeed true: Singapore will extend MRT to Johore.
- NEL was originally planned to head for Ubin but because Ubin is one of the last pristine, virginal piece of land we have left, the government decided not to extend it to the island.
- BONUS: There will be an MRT station right in front of my block, Bedok Town Park MRT. I am happy.
While I’m happy 99% was from the top of my head, I cannot stop adding on more trivia! ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MRT SYSTEM: FEEL FREE TO ASK ME, OKAY?
